Backstock

The remainder of product from a previous delivery that can’t be put out on the shop floor. Usually worked first ahead of any cages from a new delivery to ensure the oldest product is put out first.

Back-gate buzzer

Button at the back gate in large stores to trigger an automated announcement over the tannoy: ‘there is a caller at the back gate, please attend’.

Back office

A system used in-store to maintain sales and pricing information for the produts ranged. Back office downloads price changes each night and pushes them to the checkouts. Also used to print shelf-edge labels and POS. Accessed with SRTB sign-in details.

Basket checkout

Checkout designed for customers with fewer than 10 items of shopping, that are placed straight into a bag once they have been scanned at the checkout.

Previously known as express checkout.

Better waste routines (BWR) report

Report available on G drive that details waste from each store, reported by year-to-date, quarter, period and week.

Also known as blended waste report (BWR).

Bill of materials (BOM)

Every new store receives an equipment package. The new store opening package contains stationery, materials and equipment needed to open a new store.

Blue, red, amber, green report (BRAG report)

Report that scores performance down a grading system as blue, green, amber or red where blue means you’ve exceeded your target positively down to red, meaning you’ve missed your target.

BOB

Bottom of bag. A security process when conducting service checks.

Buy one get one free. This is Tesco terminology for a certain promotional offer.

Stock control

Branch accounts reports

Monthly budget statements showing sales, including and excluding the petrol filling station, waste, shrinkage, payroll, expenses and proft found on the information for business system.

BST

Business support team. A team responsible for supporing an area of the business.

Budget control sheet

Statement showing the forecast spend on wages based on store turnover.

Buy as you earn (BAYE)

Scheme for staff, with three months’ service or more, to buy shares on a regular basis from their gross pay, pre-tax and national insurance.

Beers, wines and spirits. An in-store department dedicated to alcoholic beverages.
